Her country is nearing war with the empire of Artaiga who claim that all land on the continent is the right of their emperor, a cruel dictator named Zyrin who has commited genocide against other small nations. Fearing the task is too much for her, she runs away from the castle and is ambushed in the woods by Brigands.
The Brigand Leader, a rebellious outcast from Artaiga named Kane Black, takes her in and listens to her plight and desire for freedom, he offers a chance to become a member of his band. She accepts and it is not long before the two become infatuated with each other. Lyral decides to return home after a few weeks to leave appropriate instructions for the regent. Upon her return, her former love, Rstyal, a student from the mage academy where she grew up, surprises her and reveals himself as the prince she is to marry. Though her desire for freedom is strong, the prince tells her of the plight of the people and how she must be strong for them, and offers to help her be strong. Forced to decide between two very different men, she takes to the streets of her town in disguise and witnesses the people. Afterwards, she realizes that she can be free in her duties as well, as long as she has her love.
She sends a messenger to the brigands to tell Kane of her decision, the messenger is sent back beaten and near death, but her healing magic helps him recover. Soon she finds that the brigand band who was only robbing the routes of the aggressive nation of Artaiga is now robbing her country's caravans as well. Sadly, she feels she made a mistake and goes to apologize to the brigand leader herself, but is attacked by Artaiga's forces, her small caravan is outnumbered and outgunned. But Kane himself appears with several of his brigands and drives them off.
After the fight Lyral approaches Kane but he turns his back to her, bursting into tears she tries to tell him that she didn't mean to hurt him, and that she was needed by her people, Kane simply walks away, dropping a small piece of paper. Lyral examines the paper, it is old and is marked with a Black Heart with two crossed blades impaling it. Her loyal sage looks at the note and gasps, telling her the story of a mystical artifact that powers the hearts of people with love and kindness and that this symbol is the symbol of the weapons designed by demons to destroy the artifact known as The Heart Engine which would plunge mankind into endless war. Lyral takes her most loyal guardians on a quest to track down Kane and find out his intentions. She leaves her bethrothed to prepare for the coming invasion. Rystal sends for his armies to come defend the state of Marelie.
Lyral, her handmaiden Milla and her bodygaurd Forkus, track the brigands to an ancient shrine in the mountains. They find the brigands divided. Kane's right hand man accuses him of insanity and many of them refuse to follow Kane on what he calls a mad quest. Kane's cut him down with 2 glowing black swords and the brigands flee in droves. Kane enters the shrine alone. Lyral approaches them as they flee and ask them what has happened. They say that Kane has found a mystical machine and intends to use it to get revenge.
Lyral sends asks the brigands to go to Marilie and help defend the country, saying that she must handle Kane herself. With her homeland in crisis, Lyral must find the strength to confront Kane, before he unleashes the secret of The Heart Engine. A secret that could doom the entire world.
Physical Description - Lyral has fair hair and fair skin. She stands slighter taller than most women. She isn't very strong since she spends most of her time reading books. She loves all sorts of clothes and wears many outfits, from the extravagant to the revealing. She does not consider herself to be attractive, no matter how much others suggest the opposite.
Weapons - Lyral's prime weapon is the Staff of Hyancith. It has been handed down from mother to daughter in the Covington line for centuries. Only recently has the staff been shown to have magical powers and one of Lyral's task as the new princess is to unlock it's secrets. Unlike in most games where the user exchanges weapons for more powerful ones. The Staff grows along with Lyral and develops new powers and abilities as she does.
Attacks - Lyral is mostly a healer. Many of her own abilities are defensive in nature. Although she can learn some offensive spells, her handmaiden Milla is more of an offensive magic specialist. Lyral does gain some offensive abilities through the Staff of Hyancith, though. And they are particualry strong against demons and the undead.
Personality - Lyral has a quirky personality and is easily flustered. She enjoys mingling with common folk more than royalty. She loves books and literature which led to her choosing a path in healing magic. She gets startled easily, sometimes by her own spells. She is a daydreamer and wants very much to be free and not have to shoulder the "weight of the world" as she often puts it. But she is a caring person at heart and deep down wants what's best for everyone. Even the angry man who wishes to destroy the world. Lyral harbors a paralyzing fear of rats.
Famous Quote - "I often wish that doing the right thing and doing the thing you want to do were one and the same. Then no one would ever get hurt."
